Assistant Professor, Oboe
Position Description and Essential Functions
The School of Music, Dance and Theatre in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks an innovative artist-teacher of oboe who will participate in our effort to reimagine what arts education means in the 21st century. This will be a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning in Fall 2025. This position includes undergraduate and graduate teaching, research and service responsibilities on the ASU Tempe campus.
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in studio teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, which includes performance majors, as well as teachers, music therapists, composers and scholars. Additional teaching duties will include oboe-related courses such as repertoire, pedagogy, reed-making and chamber music ensembles, and may include developing online courses. The candidate will pursue a continued career of research and creative activity and contribute to the musical life of the School of Music, Dance and Theatre. Further responsibilities include recruiting a vibrant cohort of undergraduate and graduate oboe students regionally, nationally and internationally, mentoring and assisting students toward their professional goals and working effectively with faculty colleagues and administration in service to satisfy and advance the school’s mission. Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated excellence as an oboe performer.
- Doctorate in Music or a Masters in a related field plus 5 years of professional experience performing in significant venues at the regional and/or national level.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching applied oboe at the collegiate level.
- Record of national creative activity and scholarship.
Desired Qualifications:
- International recognition in creative activity and scholarship.
- Success in recruiting and attracting students and developing an oboe studio program.
- Experience teaching undergraduate- and graduate-level university students.
- Demonstrated expertise in teaching and/or developing courses in oboe pedagogy and oboe repertoire.
- Demonstrated expertise in teaching reed-making classes.
- Experience teaching and/or interacting with secondary school music programs.
- Experience coaching woodwind chamber music.
- Evidence of or potential for successful applications for research funding.
- The ability to work and collaborate across artistic disciplines, including interdisciplinary creative activity with people outside the arts, across campus and in the community, within and outside of the arts.
- Demonstrated efficacy in developing/delivering innovative courses, including online and/or hybrid formats or developing websites and/or online course resources.
