Cultivating entrepreneurship at Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts

Herberger Institute is committed to cultivating innovation and entrepreneurship in design and the arts. Opportunities include cross-institute degree programs and activities that engage directly with entrepreneurship and enterprise development for the creative industries. Herberger Institute degrees with an entrepreneurial component include the Master of Arts in Creative Enterprise and Cultural Leadership, the Master of Science in Innovation and Venture Development (in partnership with W.P. Carey School of Business and Ira Fulton School of Engineering) and the Undergraduate Certificate in Music Entrepreneurship.


The Master of Arts in Creative Enterprise and Cultural Leadership (CECL) trains students to be changemakers and innovators working towards a more just and sustainable society. Students engage with local and national leaders in classes, site visits, collaborative projects, and a field experience course that includes travel to another city.

Using arts and design-based methods to advance a range of enterprises, graduates are equipped to pursue positions as arts managers, cultural producers, civic leaders, business leaders, among other roles.

The Master of Science in Innovation and Venture Development (MSIVD) integrates the most advanced practices and technologies from business, engineering and design in a transdisciplinary, experience-based program that prepares the next generation of leaders with skills needed to launch successful ventures in any industry or sector, inside existing organizations or as new entities.

Graduates are prepared to lead cross-disciplinary teams in a world of growing uncertainty and ambiguity. They can identify needs and evaluate opportunities, generating insights from real-world problems; innovate solutions; and create and launch scalable business models that provide value to all stakeholders. Founders with this innovation and venture development degree from ASU will define a new standard for venture development.

The undergraduate Certificate in Music Entrepreneurship intersects the traditional music disciplines with business and marketing skills targeted specifically towards the arts. Music entrepreneurship harnesses the skills and mindset of the entrepreneur to empower musicians to create work that is meaningful, sustainable and oriented to community and market needs.

InnovationSpace
InnovationSpace in The Design School is a transformative experience, where students build the skills of the future and develop their capacity for collaboration and innovation as they produce extraordinary projects. The joint venture with multiple colleges, including Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and W. P. Carey School of Business, provides students with a unique opportunity to complete projects that matter with a transdisciplinary student teams. 

Changemaker Central@ASU
Changemaker Central is a student-driven initiative dedicated to direct service, service learning, entrepreneurship and high impact careers. Its mission is to develop and nurture students by providing the opportunities and resources to inspire, catalyze and sustain student-driven social change.

J. Orin Edson Entrepreneurship + Innovation Institute
Creating a place for entrepreneurship and education to co-exist, this site offers a range of programs and resources for entrepreneurs. It provides access to resources, funding and support as your ideas begin to take shape.

  • ASU Startup School
    A series of workshops offering the entrepreneur the steps necessary to develop a successful venture
  • Entrepreneurship Outreach Network
    A collaborative network of libraries, museums and community partners that advance and promote local innovation and entrepreneurship through knowledge sharing. The partners in the network provide community members with broad access to continuing education in entrepreneurship, mentors, service providers and other community-based resources for current and aspiring small-business owners.

  • Venture Devils
    Venture Devils supports all ASU student, faculty, staff, and community-based entrepreneurs and aims to catalyze the entrepreneurial success of founders by connecting them with Venture Mentors who provide regular, ongoing support. Participants may receive direct access to ASU funding opportunities and venture development spaces. The program supports all industries including creative enterprise development. Creative ventures that have participated include photography studios, art galleries, freelance artists, web design, and fashion designers.

Center for Entrepreneurship
The Center for Entrepreneurship at the W. P. Carey School of Business fosters and empowers entrepreneurs in the classroom and across the wider ASU community. The center works closely with executives and mentors, who share their ideas with the next generation of great entrepreneurs.

  • New Venture Challenge 
    The New Venture Challenge is a course and competition designed for ASU graduate students, exceptional ventures and their co-founders who seek to advance a new venture concept to the next stage. The course gives participants across ASU the opportunity to further develop core aspects of their business model and fine-tune pitch messaging with feedback from experienced entrepreneur faculty and mentors.

Fulton Schools ASU Innovation Open 
Entrepreneurship + Innovation at the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering empowers all Fulton Schools undergraduate and graduate students to advance their entrepreneurial ideas for the benefit of our economy and society. Collectively, our goal is to enhance the synergy between technology-based innovation and entrepreneurship for all Sun Devils.
