REU Site: REU: Computational Imaging and Mixed-Reality for Visual Media Creation and Visualization
The Challenge
Training the next generation of STEM researchers in visual media experiences from new forms of imaging to augmented and mixed reality requires integrating knowledge from several disciplines and effectively communicating that information to students and trainees. Interdisciplinary work which broadens participation in computing into the media arts and sciences, allowing students to engage with a larger segment of the public is a key focus of this Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU).
The Approach
The proposed REU site will be hosted at the School of Arts, Media and Engineering at Arizona State University. The REU Site for Computational Imaging and Mixed-Reality for Visual Media Creation and Visualization will recruit eight students each summer for the next three years for a ten-week long experience in computational imaging and mixed-reality research. Students will be paired with an engineering/computer science mentor as well as a mentor from the media arts and sciences program, to broaden the impacts and applications of their research. Students will have the opportunity to present their work in both scientific publications and conferences as well as novel dissemination through public exhibition, outreach to the local community, and engagement with a wider audience interested in visual media.
