Symbolic artwork for Indigenous space

The Indigenous Design Collaborative in The Design School partnered with a local artist to make a 25-foot table that evokes the ancient canal system built by the Hohokam tribe. The symbolic artwork was created for the Labriola National American Indian Data Center at Hayden Library on the Tempe campus.

Designing for Dreamscape

A class of Arizona State University students, who were the first to use the new Dreamscape Learn virtual reality platform, presented their time-traveling climate-change scenario to visitors, including Walter Parkes, the Hollywood producer who is now CEO of Dreamscape Immersive, and ASU President Michaael Crow. The Designing for Dreamscape course in the School of Arts, Media and Engineering is part of a partnership between Dreamscape Immersive and ASU to form Dreamscape Learn and create fully immersive virtual reality learning systems for the ASU community and beyond.

The School of Arts, Media and Engineering, a transdisciplinary collaborative between the Herberger Institute and the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, recently unveiled its new esports lounge for students to gather and play video games and to hone skills for careers in the world of esports and beyond.

Spotlight on faculty

The U.S. Senate recently voted to confirm Maria Rosario Jackson as the 13th chair of the National Endowment for the Arts. Jackson is an Institute Professor at ASU’s Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, where she leads the Studio for Creativity, Place and Equitable Communities. President Joe Biden announced his intent to nominate Jackson for the post in October.

This month’s number is 377! ASU’s Herberger Institute graduated 377 designers and artists and arts scholars, including undergraduate and graduate students across all of the schools in the Herberger Institute.

ASU held its first in-person commencement ceremony since 2019 Monday, Dec. 13 at Sun Devil Stadium to celebrate fall graduates from the Class of 2021 plus graduates from 2020 and spring 2021 who wished to attend.
