Description:

The School of Music, Dance and Theatre in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks a visiting assistant teaching professor of music theory for a one-year, full-time, benefits-eligible position for the 2023-24 academic year. The position entails teaching courses in our undergraduate theory core, upper level undergraduate electives, and graduate seminars related to the candidate’s interests. This position is on the ASU Tempe Campus.

Required qualifications:

  • PhD or DMA in Music Theory, Composition, or a related field; ABD considered
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching theory and aural skills classes
  • Demonstrated ability to teach in at least two of these three areas: the undergraduate theory core, analysis of song (broadly defined), and/or 20th/21st century music and related analytical techniques.
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in teaching and service

 

Desired qualifications:

  • PhD degree in music theory preferred
  • Demonstrated implementation of research-based pedagogical strategies
  • Demonstrated ability to teach effectively at multiple levels, including undergraduate core courses, advanced undergraduate electives, and graduate seminars
  • Demonstrated engagement with current pedagogical practices in the field of music theory
  • Demonstrated engagement with innovative course development and/or creative approaches to teaching
  • Expertise in current and innovative uses of technology in the classroom and in the delivery of course content
  • Strong keyboard and musicianship skills
