The School of Art in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks a full-time 9-month (academic year) tenure-track Assistant Professor in Art Therapy, beginning August 2024, with an emphasis on research in contemporary art within person-centered art therapy to address mental health. This position includes research, teaching and service responsibilities on the Phoenix and Tempe, Arizona, campuses.

The School of Art seeks a candidate with a rich and varied skill set in the field of person-centered Art Therapy that is socially and culturally responsive. The successful candidate is expected to pursue an active research agenda that integrates a variety of factors, including socio-economics, social justice, diverse cultural-aesthetics and social-linguistics for deeper therapeutic engagement for clients. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to establishing a dynamic and forward-thinking Art Therapy undergraduate program that expands the field of art therapy and counseling beyond its traditional applications, including developing curriculum and new courses related to their area of expertise. The successful candidate is expected to pursue an active teaching agenda, including teaching and mentoring undergraduate art students based on department needs. The successful candidate is expected to teach upper and lower division courses and instruct a variety of in-person, hybrid, and online course offerings. The successful candidate is expected to contribute impactful service to the program, the School of Art, the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, and ASU as well as the profession and/or the community. Desired Qualifications:

• Ability to teach undergraduate art therapy courses using innovative pedagogy, such as an extensive skill set that includes less traditional art therapy materials such as sound and performance art, as well as other genres of art in the expanded field
• A comprehensive understanding of contemporary art with the ability to integrate and explore the role of contemporary art-based concepts and nomenclature into art therapeutic pedagogy
• Experience working collaboratively in academic, art therapy and community settings
• Demonstrated client-contact hours utilizing both art therapy and talk therapy in 1:1, virtual, open studio, and group therapy formats
• Fieldwork competencies in counseling techniques that support, engage and integrate multiple mental health frameworks in service of providing holistic and comprehensive care.
• Ambitions to bring a high level of informed criticality to the field of art therapy, its history, practices, traditions, and healthcare systems is highly valued.
• Research that engages diverse paradigms and enhances inclusiveness such as critical understanding of the mental health challenges that varying populations confront
