Next steps for First-Time Freshmen


1. Review the entrance requirements for your major

All the programs in the Herberger Institute require an additional step to be fully accepted into the major, with the exception of the BA in the Arts, BA in Art Studies, BA in Digital Culture, BA in Filmmaking Practices, BA in Theater, BS in Environmental Design, BA in Art History, BA in Museum Studies, and BA in Performance and Movement. Please review the additional program requirements related to your area of study by using the following links:


2. Submit your enrollment deposit

In order to secure your enrollment at ASU you need to visit My ASU to submit your enrollment deposit. All newly admitted freshmen pay an enrollment deposit to confirm your housing reservation and dining preferences.

3. Sign up for new student orientation

All incoming freshmen must attend new student orientation. To sign up for an orientation session, log on to My ASU and review your Next Steps checklist and select the orientation link. At orientation you will meet your advisor and register for spring classes, in addition to meeting some of your new classmates and getting acquainted with your new university. new student orientation is an important part of your future success at ASU.

During your orientation session you will receive critical information regarding:

  • Entrance requirements into the Herberger majors
  • Course sequencing that could affect your graduation plan
  • Advising tools to help you stay on the right track for a four-year graduation
  • Other key resources on the ASU campus

Students who are unable to attend New Student Orientation should contact the Herberger Institute Office of Student Success at 480-965-4495.

4. Confirm your housing

All new incoming freshmen are assigned to live in the Arcadia Residential Community for Design and the Arts.You need to confirm your housing and dining preferences online through My ASU under your Next Steps checklist. Please follow instructions under the “Confirm or Modify Your Housing and Dining Options”.

5. Take the math placement exam

Take the online Math Placement Exam at least 72 hours prior to attending orientation. You may take the exam a maximum of two (2) times and your score determines your placement in a math class your first semester

Students who have not taken the math placement exam will be ineligible to register for classes during orientation.

If you have passed a college-level math course with a grade of C or higher, you are not required to take the math placement exam, but you must bring a copy of your unofficial transcript to your orientation session and submit a final, official copy of your college transcript to:

6. Submit documentation of Measles vaccination

You must provide documentation that you have had two measles vaccinations (one of which must be dated after 1979) or a lab test showing proof of immunity to the measles (rubeola). The MMR vaccine is available for a fee at any of ASU's health services locations.

Students must submit the MMR Immunization Form before they can register for classes. A student will have a MMR Immunization hold until measles information is received and verified. For additional information about the MMR Immunization requirement, visit the Health Services website.

7. Fall 2019 classes begin on Thursday, August 22, 2019.
