Next steps for First-Time Freshmen

1. Review the entrance requirements for your major

All the programs in the Herberger Institute require an additional step to be fully accepted into the major, with the exception of the BA in the Arts, BA in Art Studies, BA in Digital Culture, BA in Filmmaking Practices, BA in Theater, BS in Environmental Design, BA in Art History, BA in Museum Studies, and BA in Performance and Movement. Please review the additional program requirements related to your area of study by using the following links:

2. Submit your enrollment deposit

In order to secure your enrollment at ASU you need to visit My ASU to submit your enrollment deposit. All newly admitted freshmen pay an enrollment deposit to confirm your housing reservation and dining preferences.

3. Sign up for the virtual New Student Experience

All incoming first-year students must complete the virtual New Student Experience. To sign up for the virtual experience, log on to My ASU and review your Next Steps checklist and select the experience link. During this virtual session you will meet your advisor, register for classes and become acquainted with your new university. The New Student Experience is an important part of your future success at ASU.

During your virtual orientation session you will receive critical information regarding:

  • Entrance requirements into the Herberger majors
  • Course sequencing that could affect your graduation plan
  • Advising tools to help you stay on the right track for a four-year graduation
  • Other key resources on the ASU campus

Students who are unable to compelete the New Student Experience should contact the Herberger Institute Office of Student Success at 480-965-4495.

4. Confirm your housing

All new incoming freshmen are assigned to live in the Arcadia Residential Community for Design and the Arts. You need to confirm your housing and dining preferences online through My ASU under your Next Steps checklist. Please follow instructions under the “Confirm or Modify Your Housing and Dining Options”.

For more details about your new community, visit Arcadia information page on the Herberger Institute website..

5. Take the math placement exam

If you need to take any math classes at ASU, you must take the Math Placement Test in order to register for a math course and to determine the appropriate math course that matches your skill level. The test can be taken online at the Math Placement website. You may take the exam a maximum of two (2) times, and your score determines your placement in a math class your first semester. For incoming students attending a virtual orientation, please keep this is mind and take your placement assessment at least 48-72 hours before your orientation date.

If you have passed a college–level math course with a grade of C or higher, you are not required to take the math placement exam.

6. Submit documentation of Measles vaccination

You must provide documentation that you have had two measles vaccinations (one of which must be dated after 1979) or a lab test showing proof of immunity to the measles (rubeola). The MMR vaccine is available for a fee at any of ASU's health services locations.

A student will have a MMR Immunization hold until measles information is received and verified. For additional information about the MMR Immunization requirement, visit the Health Services website.
