The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University is making strides in the field of creative placemaking, and the Institute received a $610,000 grant from the Kresge Foundation to support those efforts.

The grant was awarded as part of the ArtPlace America initiative, a collaboration of foundations, institutions and federal agencies nationwide working to position arts and culture as a core sector of comprehensive community planning and development. ArtPlace focuses its work on creative placemaking, which describes projects in which art plays an intentional and integrated role in place-based community planning and development, according to the ArtPlace website.
The grant allows the Herberger Institute to explore the feasibility of developing a Creative Placemaking Institute and to continue the national conversation about the role of higher education in creative placemaking.
