The Humble Watermelon: How Design Can Help Feed a Community, a Virtual Lecture by Audrey Handelman

Based on research conducted by the LA Food Policy Council, 31% of the people living in Los Angeles do not have access to affordable fresh fruits and vegetables, and there are currently 1,300 small corner stores in the City of Los Angeles, but only 28% of these stores offer healthy food options. In a Los Angeles neighborhood with limited healthy food options, the transformation of Lupita’s Market sparked change that reduced food inequity for the community and engaged the neighborhood around a much-loved corner store.

The Influence of Landscape by Chad D. Danos

This presentation will establish a framework of how landscape has an influence on each of us through culture, philosophy, practice and mission. An exploration of these four motives will reveal the interconnection of people and place and what that means for us as landscape architects. It will challenge us to not only ask the tough questions, but to be leaders within each of our communities and the role that the American Society of Landscape Architects can play at various stages of our career.

The With-Drawing Room Exhibition

Join The Design School's second year and fourth year environmental design students for "The With-Drawing Room." This free event will take place at the Phoenix Art Museum on Friday, Dec. 7, in the Great Hall from 6 to 10 p.m.

The exhibition will showcase the student's work involving memories and memos, manifested in the form of manuscripts, books, models and videos. Each student conducted research of personal memories and current societal conditions, creating a library that attempts to counter the current 'withdrawing' of books from physical reality.
