Sounding Out Spaces: Garden Ecologies

Apr 28 2017 - 7:30pm

Sounding Out Spaces is a site-responsive sonic art project that explores ecosystemic relationships between people, sounds and spaces. The project, which was started by sound artist and Arizona State University professor Lauren Hayes in 2014, involves musical and technical approaches for artistically responding to and participating in a given site. These sites have included buildings and spaces that have not been designated as concert venues, as well as outdoor urban and rural settings, and they range from retired industrial structures, visually stimulating landscapes, architecture with unique acoustic properties, natural environments, or places of cultural or historical significance. Guerrilla improvisations have taken place at the Grand Canyon, Yosemite National Park and the Salton Sea, California.

In collaboration with Arts, Media and
Engineering researcher and sound artist, Julian Stein, Sounding Out Spaces: Garden Ecologies invites various community groups to take part in the project through a series of sound workshops based at the Clark Park Community Garden and the Children First Leadership Academy. In these workshops, children from Free Arts will be invited to explore and learn about listening to the environment, sound recording, building low cost and DIY instruments, and improvisation. This will culminate in a public site-responsive performance on Saturday, April 29.

The materials produced by the children will be incorporated into a sound installation that weaves together acoustic characteristics of the site with environmental and biophysical information from the garden and plants into an evolving and dynamic ecosystem.

This event will take place at Clark Park Community Garden, 1730 S. Roosevelt St., Tempe.
