Performance with a View Presents: ASU's World Percussion Ensemble

March 20, 10 a.m.

The World Percussion Ensemble is under the direction of Benjamin Yats, a doctoral student in the Arizona State University Herberger Institute School of Music. The rhythms taught are drawn from the drumming cultures of Africa, the Middle East, India, the Caribbean and South America.

This class is a learning and performing ensemble. As part of the Ethnomusicology program, the World Percussion Ensemble is taught through oral tradition where students are encouraged to use their memory to retain the rhythms, songs and folklore. Cultural information on the origins of the material accompanies the music being played, and its historical development. By learning in the traditional way, students gain personal insights into the cultures and ethnic groups covered.

This concert takes place at the Tempe Center for the Arts. Coffee service begins at 9:30 a.m. and the program follows at 10 a.m. For more information on the Performance with a View series, visit the Tempe Center for the Arts website.
