Comrades of Time: Christina Kemp

What does it mean to work slow? Christina Kemp's Master of Fine Arts thesis, "Comrades of Time," questions how less-than-efficient hand labor can alter our perception of and interaction with the highly mechanized world we live in.

Kemp utilizes pre-modern craft methods to alter and embellish materials that stand as totems to industry and consumerism. What is laid bare through these transformations is both the intrinsic value of ordinary materials and the inherent value of time. Central to this work is the contrast in speed between the instantaneousness of our society with the deliberate slowness of her studio.
