Come As You Are Ball: The Escape

6:30–11 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 14

Come As You Are is inspired by the underground vogue ballroom scene and was created to celebrate individuality and to bring Phoenix Metro communities together to learn about the cultures, histories and dances of voguing and waacking. Several events are scheduled throughout the week, with the Come As You Are Ball: The Escape set for Saturday, Oct. 14 from 6:30–11 p.m. at Fair Trade Cafe in Phoenix.

The ball is an open space for individuality through ball culture, waacking and vogue. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to represent themselves in any way they feel just. There will be performances, a fashion show, a waacking battle, a vogue exhibition, music and space for dancing. The event is free. Donations will be collected for Aliento, an organization that creates community healing through art that leads to collective people power.

Event Schedule:

Oct. 12 — Screening of the movie "Kiki"
"Kiki" is a documentary following the personal stories of seven characters from the Kiki community, illuminating the Kiki scene and queer life in the U.S. for LGBTQ youth-of-color. After the screening, guest artist Omari Mizrahi and ASU dance faculty Marcus White will discuss the film.
Oct. 13 — Vogue and Waacking Workshops
Oct. 14 — Come As You Are Ball: The Escape
Oct. 15 — Afrobeat Class with Omari at EPIK
