'Engineering the Future' introduces ASU minds to industry needs

That was the intent behind “Engineering the Future: Entrepreneurship, Partnerships and a Commitment to Innovation,” an event held Tuesday to introduce and promote collaboration between industry and the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.

ASU Art Museum receives Contemporary Craft Initiative grant from Windgate Charitable Foundation

ASU Art Museum is the recipient of a two-year, $330,000 grant from the Windgate Charitable Foundation in support of the establishment of the Windgate Contemporary Craft Initiative. This gift will support a series of contemporary craft exhibitions, visiting artists and scholars, new acquisitions, conservation, public and university programs and student awards in contemporary craft.

ASU celebrates its innovators as new chapter of National Academy of Inventors launches at university

If necessity is the mother of invention, Arizona State University is a hotbed of midwifery.

The university celebrated opening a chapter of the National Academy of Inventors by honoring the 101 faculty and researchers who have earned patents or had their technology licensed by ASU.

Of the top 100 universities in the world for patents, ASU ranks 38th.

ASU Concert Band and the Harmony Project Phoenix join forces to present a free concert Feb. 28

The ASU Concert Band and the Harmony Project Phoenix are joining forces to present a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in the Evelyn Smith Music Theatre on ASU’s Tempe campus.

The concert features world premieres of commissioned works for Harmony Project Phoenix soloists, all of whom are primary or secondary school students. Music composition majors in the ASU School of Music wrote the concertos for soloists as part of an interdisciplinary project to learn about how to write music for young, developing musicians with advanced band accompaniment.

ASU director to give keynote at Society for Science, Literature and the Arts conference

Sha Xin Wei, the director of the School of Arts, Media and Engineering, will give a keynote speech at the 2017 Annual Meeting of the Society for Literature, Science and the Arts (SLSA) in November. The school is a transdisciplinary unit at ASU formed between the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts and the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering,

“This offers an opportunity to introduce fusion practices transmuting both art and science,” Sha said.

ASU film school makes blockbuster move

The contracts have been signed. The equipment has been moved. The sets have been built. And now students are in class.

ASU film professor Janaki Cedanna (pictured above) has been charging hard the past six months, but he was all smiles this week. His dream of boosting the university’s film program has come true through an innovative partnership with Sun Studios of Arizona that gives more than 600 students access to state-of-the-art soundstages and production facilities.
