The Design School

Job description:

The Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks to hire a faculty member in Experience Design/Interaction Design. This full-time, academic year appointment will begin August 2021 and will be a joint appointment between The Design School and the School of Arts, Media and Engineering. Appointment type and academic rank will be based on experience. The person hired for this position will be a leader in the development of new graduate curricula and research/creative programs in immersive experience design, extended realities practices, and design futures – the core components of the new ASU @ Mesa City Center facility, the emerging media technologies center opening in May 2022. This appointment will place at the top of our research agenda for designing the challenges and possibilities of human experience in the digital and computational futures. This position will enhance design and emerging media programs with a reinforced focus on what new digital technologies contribute to design methodology and vice versa.

This joint appointment between The Design School (tenure/academic/evaluation home) and the School of Arts, Media and Engineering will have duties primarily related to the ASU @ Mesa City Center facility and its programs, including the teaching and mentoring of graduate students, the development of curricula across and between disciplines (including online and hybrid deployment courses), and instruction of courses in immersive experience design, extended reality practices (VR/AR/MR), design futures, and related areas. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to maintain a program of research and/or creative activity commensurate with the rank and classification of the appointment in the fields of immersive experience design and/or extended reality (potentially including but not limited to: entertainment design, game design, simulation, speculative design, tangible interaction, experiential futures, information architecture, and/or experimental applications of XR technologies), including cultivation of transdisciplinary/cross-disciplinary collaborations, successful grant seeking/sponsored project development, and other collaborations with industry and community partners.
