Prospective Undergraduate Students

Housing

You are used to being successful – in school, in extracurricular activities, in life! As you plan for college, you want to make sure that you continue on a path that other successful students have chosen.

First-year students in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts reside in the Arcadia residential community that provides academic support and an opportunity to live with other students who share the same passion, appreciation and dedication to arts and design. Research shows that students who live on campus their first year experience greater academic success. They tend to transition more easily to university life, remain in school at higher rates than students who live off-campus, graduate faster, be more involved in co-curricular activities and be more connected to the university community.

ASU expects all freshmen to live on campus therefore the Herberger Institute has created the Arcadia Residential Community for Design and the Arts that can accommodate all first-time freshmen within the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. All Herberger freshmen, other than Herberger Honors freshmen who will be living in the Barrett Honors Community, are required to live in the Arcadia Residential Community for Design and the Arts in the Center Complex.

Our community is an academic and residential program specifically designed for students who are pursuing a major in architecture, art, dance, design studies, film, graphic design, housing and community development, industrial design, interior design, landscape architecture, music or theatre.

This unique program creates a community that can foster your personal development, both intellectually and socially, while providing facilities to meet your academic and living needs. It combines a social community with programs designed to complement your coursework and interests. You will be living and learning with creative students from every program in the arts and design to collaborate on projects, compare notes on classes and share your interests and talents. You will also have the benefit of having studio space and practice rooms in the community to foster your genius. This environment will enrich your first-year experience at ASU through opportunities to see multiple perspectives of creation, discover innovations in the arts and design that compliment your degree and meet more students who share similar passions. Not only will you live with your peers, you will be in a community where learning takes an active role.

A group of staff, faculty and student leaders are dedicated to helping you be successful in your first year at ASU by providing guidance as you develop your interests and meeting with you and other students for informal discussions. The community will house 22 Student Academic Mentors (SAMs) throughout the three halls of Center Complex (Best, Hayden and Irish) and as student leaders, they will provide programming for a wide range of opportunities including firm tours, performances, trips, meetings and other events that will enhance your first-year experience.
