Curriculum

A baccalaureate education should not only prepare students for a particular profession or advanced study, but for constructive and satisfying personal, social, and civic lives as well. In addition to depth of knowledge in a particular academic or professional discipline, students should also be broadly educated and develop the general intellectual skills they need to continue learning throughout their lives. To that end, Arizona State University has established a general studies requirement for all students in the university, regardless of major.

The general studies requirement includes first-year composition; Literacy and General Inquiry; Mathematical Studies; Humanities, Fine Arts and Design and Social and Behavioral Sciences; Natural Sciences; Cultural Diversity in the United States; Global Awareness; and Historical Awareness.

For details about the general studies requirement, please see the ASU General Catalog. The ASU General Catalog is the official document detailing all degree requirements for the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts.

You can access the General Catalog online to view a critical-tracking major map that describes a typical student’s eight-semester schedule, including “critical courses” that must be completed each semester. To explore all degree options, you also can access the ASU Academic Programs. There is a different major map for every degree at ASU and you can access your major map directly from your My ASU account.

Students following the 2006 catalog or earlier may access a Curriculum Check Sheet for their major that outlines their requirements. Follow the links below for your catalog year. See your academic advisor for a check sheet from a catalog year before 2002.

DARS

A Degree Audit Report (DARS) is an electronic version of your degree requirements. DARS automatically matches courses you have completed with the requirements of a particular academic degree program, resulting in a report that shows which requirements are satisfied and which requirements remain to be fulfilled. It is intended to serve as a guide for efficient selection of courses toward graduation. Check your DARS report regularly and bring any DARS issues to your advisor immediately. You can access your DARS report through your My ASU account.
