Applying

Students interested in the BA in Design Studies, BA in the Arts, BA in Film (Filmmaking Practices), BA in Art (Art Studies), BA in Art (Art History) and BA in Art (Museum Studies) are admitted directly into the major by indicating their degree preference on their admission application. No additional application is required to pursue these degree programs.

Students interested in a BSD in Architecture Studies, Graphic Design (Visual Communication), Housing and Community Development, Industrial Design, Interior Design or the BSLA in Landscape Architecture, also are admitted directly into the major, but they are required to pass a portfolio milestone at the end of their freshman year to be eligible to complete the degree. The design programs are comprised of a one-year pre-professional period during the first year of study. During this time, students may focus on a particular program, but it is also a time to explore and reach creatively into the array of design disciplines that the institute offers. Students can take advantage of a variety of lectures, exhibitions, and extracurricular learning opportunities to choose the design field that is right for them.

Admission to the BSD professional programs is highly competitive and begins after completion of lower-division requirements, with milestone applications and portfolios submitted in the spring semester of the first year. With the exception of the architectural studies program, the BSD degrees prepare students to move into the professions as designers. The architecture program requires the master’s degree as preparation for professional practice.

Students interested in the BFA in Art, BFA in Dance, BA/BM in Music, BA in Theatre, and BA in Film (Film and Media Production) must pass additional entrance requirements beyond those of ASU. These areas of study require an additional audition, interview, or portfolio review for full acceptance into the major.
