Current Undergraduate Students

Advising

The advising team in the Herberger Institute is cross-trained in all design and arts disciplines, and lead advisors in each area specialize in helping you navigate your undergraduate career. Herberger undergraduates are required to meet with an advisor every semester through 60 hours (typically the end of sophomore year) to ensure timely degree progress. Students are encouraged to continue meeting with an advisor through senior year.

The Herberger Advising Office is located in the Design South Building (CDS) Room 101, which is located near the SW corner of Forest and University. Appointments are recommended and can be scheduled in advance, or students may utilize our walk-in hours.

Thinking of changing your major to a Herberger program? Read our change of major requirements.

Prepare for your advising appointment

All students must bring a current copy of their DARS report to each advising appointment. If you have not printed a DARS report prior to checking in for your appointment, you will be directed to a computer in the lobby. Learn how to run a DARS report: herbergerinstitute.asu.edu/students/undergrad/current/graduation.php.

You should also bring a written list of questions you would like to discuss or your preliminary plan detailing courses you are planning to take next semester. Access the schedule of classes via your My ASU account.

TIPS for being prepared:

  1. Know your ASU Student ID number or have your ASU ID card ready.
  2. Review your ASU Major Map and Critical Requirements and know the required courses for your major.
  3. When asking questions about specific courses know the prefix and number (i.e. DSC is the prefix and 180 is the number) of the course and the class number. The class number is a 5 digit number used to register for the class.
  4. Check your account at http://my.asu.edu for any registration holds and clear up what you can prior to seeing an advisor.
  5. If asking questions about a letter that you received from anyone at the University, bring the letter with you for the advisor to review.

Schedule an appointment

Contact Joyce Burke or Anne Ecton by phone to schedule an appointment. Advisors cannot schedule appointments via email. Phone: 480.965.4495.

Walk-in Policy

To better address student needs, the Herberger Institute advising team has implemented the following walk-in policy.

Regular walk-in hours

Tuesdays and Fridays
9–11:30 a.m. and 1–3 p.m.

Special “Extended” Walk-In Hours

Nov. 9–13 and Nov. 16–20
Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

There will be no walk-in advising hours when classes are not in session or during winter and summer sessions.

General policies for walk-in advising

Due to time constraints, the following issues are NOT eligible for walk-in service, and are by appointment only.

Only issues that can be resolved in less than 15 minutes are appropriate for walk-in advising.

How Walk-in Advising works

Walk-in advising is conducted using a "Same Day Appointment" format. A same day appointment is a 15-minute meeting you schedule the same day of the meeting.

Come to the Office of Student Success (CDS 101) as early as 8 a.m. the day you would like the meeting. When you get here, you will be able to see the on-call advisor’s schedule for the day, broken down into 15-minute meeting times. Choose the 15-minute meeting time that works with your schedule.

Some meetings may run over by a few minutes. The 15-minute time slot you schedule is not a guarantee, but the approximate time you will be seen.

What are the benefits of Same Day Appointments?

Disclaimer for all students utilizing walk-in advising

In the event of unforeseen circumstances, such as illness, etc., walk-in hours may be canceled without advance notice.
