Centers, Labs + Special Programs

In fulfillment of the Institute’s mission of collaborative and creative research programming, the Herberger Institute Research Center supports research initiatives in a variety of allied centers, labs and special programs.

Among these enterprises are InnovationSpace, a transdisciplinary laboratory where students and faculty work in partnership with inventors, researchers and businesses to create consumer-driven product concepts that improve society and the environment. InnovationSpace is a joint venture between the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and the W.P. Carey School of Business.

The Phoenix Urban Research Lab (PURL), affiliated with the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, works to promote the creative transformation of the postwar American city. Its current research focuses on the interconnections between urban design and energy demand and on emerging models for the post-petroleum city.

The ASU Stardust Center for Affordable Homes and the Family is also affiliated with the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Through research, educational outreach, advocacy and design innovation, the Stardust Center supports organizations, neighborhoods, and professionals in their efforts to improve the growth of quality affordable homes and sustainable communities.
