Beverly K. Brandt is a professor in the ASU Herberger Institute School of Design Innovation. Following its publication in April 2009, The Craftsman and The Critic: Defining Usefulness and Beauty in Arts and Crafts-Era Boston (University of Massachusetts Press) now is available in over 100 research libraries and museums in North America. Excerpts from Brandt’s book are in the current issues of American Craft magazine and Historic New England magazine. The book is a comprehensive examination of the profession of design criticism in the 19th century and its influence upon the development of the design reform – or Arts and Crafts – movement. Examining the role of critics as taste makers during the period 1860 – 1920, the book explores how their profession influenced architects, designers, craftspersons and patrons who hoped to improve design quality. The focus of the book is The Society of Arts & Crafts, Boston, viewed in a national and international context.
