Dean and Director Kwang-Wu Kim
Achieving Excellence Through Partnership
The Dean’s Council for Excellence in Design and the Arts is a select group of community leaders and friends who possess a deep understanding and appreciation for design and the arts and the vital role that these disciplines must play in a sustainable society. Members of the Council for Excellence use their varied expertise, professional experiences, and appreciation for the importance of cultural diversity to provide input and support to the Dean and the Herberger Institute. This partnership and collaboration with the Dean, the faculty, and the students of the Herberger Institute will facilitate the development of the next generation of great creative leaders in Arizona.
Investment
Council Membership is by invitation to an individual. Each member contributes at least $1,000 annually.
Members have the option to invest their financial contribution entirely to the Dean’s Investment Fund or split the contribution evenly between the Dean’s Investment Fund and the school or unit investment fund of the member’s choice.
Council for Excellence funds allow the Dean to establish and enhance institute programs that promote excellence within each of the design and arts disciplines, focusing on project development and research grants, travel scholarships, and other core institute programs.
Organizational Structure
Council for Excellence events include two professional forums each school year hosted by the Dean to bring together council members, students, faculty and community partners to address a variety of design and arts issues.
Additional opportunities to help mold programs regarding travel scholarships, project grants, and mentorships will periodically become available. Either through committee work or individually, opportunities will include professional portfolio review panels, career development, faculty research partnerships, and community cultural engagement.
Goals
Driven by a special concern for the region’s quality of life, the Council’s goal is to help the Dean to develop and maintain the highest standards of excellence for the Institute and its students. The Council will accomplish its goal through direct involvement with the Dean and the Herberger Institute enterprise, and by helping build relationships between the Institute and community leaders, identifying and investing financial resources, and advocating for the Herberger Institute.
