Students develop and hone artistic skills, have the freedom to grow aesthetically and find opportunities to stretch their limits in the Herberger Institute School of Art. Four galleries highlight our student work: Harry Wood, Northlight, Step and Gallery 100. In addition, Night Gallery, a Herberger Institute-Vestar partnership located in Tempe Marketplace, features artwork by ASU Herberger Institute School of Art faculty, graduate students and alumni.
The Herberger Institute School of Arts Media + Engineering studies the integration of the human physical experience with computation and digital media through collaborative discovery in order to improve the human condition. Graduate student Brandon Mechtley demonstrates SMALLab, a mixed-reality learning environment developed by AME that promotes interactive learning customizable to diverse learning styles.
Learning how to learn. The Herberger Institute School of Dance has a unique curriculum that nurtures each student’s creative inquiry. The program builds and develops the core competencies and reflective practice that each graduate will need in order to thrive and continue evolving in the rapidly changing dance world of the 21st Century.
The Herberger Institute School of Design Innovation connects industrial design, interior design and graphic design, offering students interdisciplinary inspiration and collaboration as they advance the future of design. Ranked among the leading music programs in the nation, the Herberger Institute School of Music provides you with access to world-class performers, scholars and teachers as well as some of the finest musical facilities available anywhere. The School of Music’s Lyric Opera Theatre annually presents two operas, two Broadway style musicals and a student workshop musical, like this 2009 production of West Side Story.
The Herberger Institute School of Theatre and Film offers an innovative academic curriculum, focusing on crossing borders and collapsing traditional performance boundaries. Undergraduate theatre major Abraham Ntonya as Orpheus in Sarah Ruhl’s “Eurydice,” presented by the School of Theatre and Film in a site-specific format at the ASU Downtown Phoenix campus.
The ASU Art Museum in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts is a center for the public, students and artists to interact and discover art and ideas, with an emphasis on the art of our time. We present exhibitions, programs and collections in diverse media by local and global, emerging and established artists. By focusing on new art forms and museum methods, engaging with issues of this place and the world, we encourage our students and visitors to explore the central role of art and creativity in their lives, in our society and in a sustainable future.
The Herberger Institute Research Center supports and promotes scholarly inquiry and applied research within the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. The Digital Phoenix research initiative created a robust 3D model of downtown Phoenix (shown here) which was exhibited at Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon's State of the City address in April 2008.
