The Contemporary Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of J. B. Smith and Simone Mancuso, presents a program of works large and small, new and old. Edgard Varese’s Ionisation and Steve Reich’s Six Marimbas helped establish new traditions in musical expression. Brett Dietz’s Sharpened Stick combines rhythmic exuberance with structural complexity. ASU composer Roshanne Etezady’s Feast or Famine, featuring marimba soloist Matt Watson, integrates virtuosic flamboyance with colorful ensemble interaction. Enrique Guimera’s Haikusticos delicately weaves together 5 marimba into poignant poetic scenes. The ensemble also preforms the North American debut of Andréas Stauder’s intricate Hur for percussion quartet.
