Dan Mayer has been the books arts printer and studio manager for Pyracantha Press since 1986. The press is located in the book arts teaching studio in the Herberger College School of Art at Arizona State University. Mayer's professional publishing activities at the press include experimental collaborative books, prints and broadsides with visiting artists, writers, musicians and poets. For this occasion the Hayden Library Channel produced a 30-minute documentary featuring Mayer's press activities. See documentary.

Mayer also specializes in teaching Artist's Books and Photopolymer Relief within the printmaking program. In the fall of 2000, Mayer founded the ASU student artist book group, ABBA: A-Buncha-Book-Artists. The club's emphasis is professional development through exhibitions and workshops with renowned guest artists such as Xu Bing, Susan kae Grant and Buzz Spector.

Studio works by Mayer reach an international audience through exhibitions, visual art workshops, residencies, and public art projects. The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture selected Mayer to curate a collection of fine art prints that are placed in public buildings. See Contemporary Print Exhibition.

The Arizona Museum for Youth in Mesa selected Mayer to guest curate "Outside the Book" a contemporary exhibition of artist's books. See story.

Mayer is currently serving on the Regional Rail Arts Commission, the oversight board for 27 public art light-rail projects throughout Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa.

Mayer's work is held in national and international public and private collections including: Artpool: Artists' Books Archives, Budapest, Hungary; Klingspor Stadt Museum, Offenbach, Germany; The Getty Center for the History of Art and Humanities, Santa Monica, Calif., Yale University, Arts of the Book Collection, Sterling Memorial Library, The Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry, Miami Beach, Fla., and others.
