We build them. We cross them. We try not to burn them.
Bridges connect people, places and things separated by divides that would be far more difficult – perhaps even impossible – to traverse without them. Bridges also are an apt metaphor for work being done at the Herberger College.
In 2002-2003…
Transforming experiences became possible when we challenged ourselves to cross
boundaries, whether academic disciplines, technology or culture. Collaborative
discovery, our action-oriented model for creativity, made interaction with
others, both on- and off-campus, an imperative. Our spirit of “connectedness”
encouraged community audiences, donors and alumni to become involved or remain
involved in the life of this college.
Of course, in this report, we especially honor those bridges that unite us with individuals and organizations who have generously offered their support to the Herberger College – and who we hope will do so again in the future.
Among them are…
Florence Wong Fie of San Francisco, a longtime supporter of ASU athletics along with her late husband, Benjamin. Mrs. Wong Fie “discovered” the Herberger College in ’02-’03. We invited her to learn more. Impressed with her findings, she established a memorial scholarship for painting and ceramics students in honor of her son, the artist Martin Wong, who died in 1999.
Laurie Herman (B.F.A., Dance, ’82; J.D., ’86), of Tempe, Ariz., a co-president of our alumni chapter. Ms. Herman enhanced her level of support to the college as a tribute to a friend through the creation of the Claudia F. Higgins Memorial Scholarship.
Bill Valentine (B.F.A., Art, ’86) of Newport Beach, Calif., a photography alumnus whose return to campus for a visit prompted a contribution to purchase sorely needed photography equipment for the School of Art.
Clearly, bridges have become fundamental on so many levels to our ability to accomplish our mission. They also have become one of our hallmarks, earning the college recognition as a national leader for the artistic innovation and collaboration that they enable. For your help in achieving this level of excellence, I thank you on behalf of the college’s faculty, staff and students.
