Summer Design Workshop

Summer in the City? Discover Design!

Are You Ready to Learn About Design?

ASU's Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts invites you to discover the architecture and community design professions through a hands-on and interactive program that focuses on exploring the many facets of design.

The Summer Design Workshop is for high school students who have an interest in the arts and design to understand, firsthand, what architects and designers do, what designing buildings and cities is all about, and most importantly, how design decisions impact the communities in which we live.

What is a Design Workshop?

The workshop is modeled on a college architectural studio where design is learned through several introductory projects. Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts faculty will teach basic design principles, lead hands-on projects, conduct discussions with Valley design professionals, and direct tours of significant sites to promote an understanding of the built environment and the design processes that shape it. The workshop faculty are assisted by Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts students, guest speakers, and professional designers.

What Will You Learn?

Over the course of the three-week program, students will take on issues of community and urban form, applying a design perspective to problem solving.

Critical thinking about the issues impacting neighborhoods and the larger community, immersion in the design process, and discussion about the community in which we live is the focus of study. Students will also have hands-on experience drawing and model design and construction.

The workshop will give students an opportunity to explore a new field of study – and quote possibly a new career option – in a college-based setting to help educate high school students about a university education. Students will also learn about design issues to make them better informed citizens and decision makers.

The program culminates in an exhibition of student projects open to the public. Friends and family are encouraged to attend.

This summer, as last summer, the Summer Design Workshop will be taught by Associate Professor of Interior Design Jose Bernardi, recent recipient of the inaugural International Interior Design Association's Southwest Industry Appreciation Award for his efforts to integrally connect the worlds of academia and professional practice, and Mark Ryan, an Adjunct Professor in the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture who also operates his own architectural office.

The teaching team will be completed with Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts student teachers.
